How to support your child through the 11+ without the stress
The 11+ matters — but your child's wellbeing matters more. The good news is that a calm, supportive approach also tends to produce better results.
Keep sessions short and regular
Little and often beats long, tiring sessions. Fifteen to twenty focused minutes a day is sustainable and effective, and it leaves plenty of room for play, rest and family time.
Praise effort, not just marks
Focus your encouragement on effort, persistence and improvement. This builds a “growth mindset” and keeps motivation up when questions get harder.
Learn from mistakes together
A wrong answer is a chance to learn. Talk through why an answer is right rather than just moving on. Tools that show worked solutions make this easy.
Protect sleep, play and downtime
A rested, happy child concentrates better and remembers more. Don't let preparation crowd out the things that keep your child balanced.
Manage your own nerves
Children pick up on parental anxiety. Keep your language positive and low-key, and remind your child (and yourself) that one exam does not define them.
Make it a little bit fun
Games, flashcards, friendly challenges and small rewards keep energy up. When practice feels enjoyable, children do more of it — and that's what really moves the needle.
