GL, CEM and regional 11+ tests: which one will your child sit?
One of the most common questions parents ask is: which 11+ test does my child actually sit? The answer depends on where you live and the schools you're applying to.
GL Assessment
GL Assessment is the most widely used 11+ provider in England. GL tests draw from defined question types across Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-verbal Reasoning, which makes familiarisation especially useful. Many grammar-school regions use GL.
CEM
CEM (formerly run by Durham University) historically provided 11+ tests designed to be harder to “prepare for”, blending subjects within papers. In recent years CEM's role in the 11+ has wound down and many former CEM regions have moved to other providers — so always confirm the current test with your school directly rather than assuming.
ISEB and independent schools
Many independent schools use the ISEB Common Pre-Test (often computer-based) for entry at 11+ or 13+. Individual independent schools may also set their own papers.
Regional consortia
Some areas run their own tests — for example, certain Essex and Kent consortia have bespoke arrangements. These can differ in format and timing from the national providers.
How to find out for sure
Check each target school's admissions page and your local authority's secondary transfer booklet, usually published in the spring. If in doubt, email the school — they will tell you the exact provider and format. Once you know, you can focus practice on the right question styles.
