The four 11+ subjects: Maths, English, Verbal & Non-verbal Reasoning

Most 11+ exams draw on four areas. Here's what each involves and how to support your child.

Maths

Covers arithmetic, fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio, basic algebra, geometry, averages and word problems — usually the KS2 curriculum, applied to problem-solving. Fluency with times tables and mental methods gives a big advantage under time pressure.

English

Includes comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary. Wide reading is the single best long-term booster for English — it grows vocabulary and comprehension naturally. Short daily reading plus targeted practice works well.

Verbal Reasoning

Tests problem-solving with words and letters: letter series, letter codes, analogies, odd-one-out and number series. These follow recognisable patterns, so familiarity with the question types makes a real difference.

Non-verbal Reasoning

Uses shapes and patterns: sequences, rotations, odd-one-out and matrices. It measures spatial and logical thinking. Because it's visual, regular exposure to the question formats helps children spot what's changing quickly.

Balancing the four

Rotate subjects so practice stays fresh, and give a little extra time to the weakest area. Tools that mark instantly and explain the answer help children learn from every question — not just tick or cross.
